Research Experience
Research assistant
Hawaiian Tree Snail Project
7/15/98 to 8/31/99
PI: Michael Hadfield, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Department of Zoology.
Duties: Fieldwork including mark/recapture studies of endangered Hawaiian tree snails, assistance in captive rearing program, data organization and entry, laboratory equipment and greenhouse maintenance.
Consultant (volunteer)
Introduced species surveys of Hawaiian harbors and reefs.
7/1/98 to present
PI: Lu Eldredge & Steve Coles, B. P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, HI.
Duties: Identification and preservation of native and non-native bryozoan specimens collected in the survey. Includes microscope work, literature searches, and correspondence with taxonomic experts.
Researcher
Survey of introduced marine invertebrates of Elkhorn Slough, CA
3/98 to 7/2000
Scope of work: Working with a post-doctoral fellow (Kerstin Wasson) at UC-Santa Cruz, I organized a volunteer crew and participated in a series of field surveys at Elkhorn Slough Natural Estuarine Research Reserve in California. We collected and identified intertidal invertebrates and conducted thorough literature searches to update an existing list of introduced marine invertebrates at the slough.
Research assistant
Rhodolith Ecology Project
7/97 to 6/98
PI: Peter Raimondi, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA.
Duties: Assisted doctoral student (Diana Steller) with research project on rhodolith bed ecology. Work included collection, identification, and preservation of macroinvertebrates and assistance with field experimental design and set-up using scuba in Baja California, Sur. Lab work in Santa Cruz involved sorting and counting specimens caught in plankton traps and cores, species identification for bryozoans, ophioroids and chitons.
Research diver
Channel Islands Research Project
4/98
Jack Engstrom, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA.
Duties: Underwater surveys of kelp forest and sea grass bed organisms (fish, invertebrates and kelp species) at several Catalina Island sites. Methods included point-contact quadrats, counts along transect lines and band transects, and timed swimming transects. Data collected were added to a 25+ year database for these sites.
Research assistant
Intertidal Biodiversity Survey
6/96 to 9/97
PI: John Pearse, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA.
Duties: Field surveys including species richness counts and quantitative sampling, species identification of ascidians and bryozoans, specimen preservation and labeling, assistance in preparing reports, abstracts, slide presentations and posters, literature research, data organization and entry, assistance with class organization and teaching Intertidal Organisms (in 1997).
Senior thesis
University of California, Santa Cruz, CA.
3/97-5/98
Scope of work: I tested three hypothesis about the apparent restriction of Watersipora subtorquata to harbors and estuaries in the Monterey Bay, using plankton tows, settlement experiments in the lab and transplant experiments in the field.
